Most of us have probably seen this one. It was a huge hit and really solidified Will Smith as a megastar. The film has noticeable flaws but it was a commercial success with the right mix of science and comedy. An Alien invasion has not been done in many years and it was timely. The effects where pretty good and one element that helped make it credible was when an alien is captured. Not only did they do a nice job with the space ships but they did a great job with the aliens making them pretty scary. These two elements make is a credible addition to the list even with noticeable flaws. Bottom line is this was a pretty decent script
Independence Day is set on July 2, 1996, when a huge spaceship comes invading Earth, launching a number of smaller spacecraft to destroy the world. As these air crafts occupy various locations on Earth, David Levinson accidentally intercepts covert satellite transmissions from the Earth’s satellites. He learns that the alien forces scheduled to make an organized attack against humas. He seeks the help of his wife, Constance, his father and the White House Communications Director in gaining access into the Oval Office to inform President Thomas J. Whitmore. Upon learning this, the president takes action by ordering a forced evacuation in all cities that are being targeted by the aliens. They are shocked to their wits when the alien forces attack before the designated time and they only manage to survive along with handful of people.
The next day, a squadron of Marine Corps F/A -18 Hornets called the Black Knights, engage in a battle with a destroyer in Los Angeles. The weapons of the squadron cannot destroy the force field of the aliens and they lose when the extraterrestrial army launches spaceships to attack them. Other military units are also simultaneously destroyed, killing many soldiers including the vice president. A pilot named Captain Steven Hiller survives an attack when he manages to cause an attacker ship to crash in the Grand Canyon. He captures the alien manning the ship when Russel Casse comes along with a number of refugees crossing the desert. Together, the two men bring the captured alien to Area 51 where they meet with the president and the other remaining survivors. In Area 51, they find out that an attacker ship and three alien bodies recovered from Roswell in 1947 are hidden there.
A scientist named Dr. Brackish Okun tries to autopsy one of the alien corpse but it comes back to life as he examines it. It tries to escape and psychically attacks President Whitmore. Fortunately, the president is saved by his security guards. After the attack, Whitmore confesses that he has glimpsed the aliens’ thoughts while it is invading his mind. He tells his colleagues that the aliens are a race who invades planets to harvest their resources. Because of this, the president decide to commence a nuclear attack on the alien invaders. He orders the B-2 Spirit to fire a nuclear missile on the destroyers above Houston but they again fail to destroy the ships’ force field.
On July 4th, Levinson introduces his plan to place a computer virus on the attacker ship that they have and use it to smuggle a nuclear missile on the mothership in order to dismantle the force field protecting the invaders. Not having a lot of volunteers, Levinson’s crew includes a man named Hiller, the president and Casse.
After implanting the virus, the president leads the mission in destroying the mothership. They are able to destabilize the force field and attack the mothership but their weaponry is not enough to destroy it. As their enemies prepare to annihilate them for the last time, Casse crashes his aircraft, with all of its missiles, on the spaceship’s weapon. The movie ends with the group’s success in destroying the mothership. Hiller and Levinson survive and the American resistance start relaying information to the other armed forces as to how they can destroy the alien vessels. The war with the extraterrestrial beings ends and the world celebrates the real “Independence Day.”
