Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace starts with Supreme Chancellor Valorum sending Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi to make negotiations with the Trade Federation regarding a number of ships barricading planet Naboo. Darth Sidious who works as the Trade Federation’s secret adviser and a Sith Lord as well, commands Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray to annihilate the Jedi and lead a droid attack on Naboo. The Jedi narrowly escapes with a Gungan outcast named Jar Jar Binks. As a token of gratitude for saving his life, Jar Jar Binks guides them to an underwater Gungan city. The Jedi try to ask for the help of the Gungan head, Boss Nass, in helping Naboo but he refuses them. As a consolation, the Jedi are provided with means of transport and they head back to the surface to save Queen Amidala, the ruler of Naboo. As they try to smuggle Amidala out of Naboo, their ship is damaged by the Federation’s battle spaceships.
The ship sustains damage and the group heads to Tatooine to have the ship repaired. In Tatooine, Qui-Gon, Jar Jar, R2D2 and Amidala’s handmaiden named Padme go to Mos Espa to acquire new parts for their damaged vehicle. There they meet Watto and his nine-year-old slave, Anakin Skywalker. The boy is talented as proved by his skills in piloting and C3PO, a protocol droid that he made. Qui Gon perceives the presence of the Force within the boy. He greatly believes that Anakin is the one prophesied to bring balance to the Force. Anakin wins his freedom from Watto by winning a podrace. He is taken by Qui Gon Jin to be his apprentice. Before they leave the planet, Qui Gon Jin fights with Darth Maul, a Sith apprentice sent by Darth Sidious to apprehend Amidala.
The Jedi warriors deliver Amidala to planet Coruscant safely. There she presents to Chancellor Valorum the condition of her people in planet Naboo. With this in hand, senator Palpatine encourages her to take a vote of no confidence in Valorum in order to have another election that will choose another leader better suit to resolve the catastrophe in Naboo. In another matter, Qui-Gon Jin seeks permission from the Jedi Council to train Anakin as a Jedi but the Council refuse, arguing that they sense Anakin’s tendency to go over the dark side of the Force. Because of this, Qui-Gon Jin decides to train Anakin himself. After the election, Amidala grows tired with the on-going corruption in the senate and she decides to return to Naboo with her Jedi companions.
Once back in Naboo, Padme uncovers the truth about her real identity. She is no other than Queen Amidala and with this revelation, she convinces the Gungans to rebel against the Trade Federation. As Jar Jar commands the attack against the droid army, Padme heads for Theed to hunt Gunray. Anakin joins the battle and manages to destroy the Federation’s ship and control of the droid army. At the same time, Qui Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi fight Darth Maul. Darth Maul heavily injures Qui-Gon Jin before he’s cut up by Obi-Wan. Before he dies, Qui-Gon Jin leaves to Obi-Wan the task of training Anakin. At the final moments, the war ends with the election of Palpatine as the new Supreme Chancellor and arrest of Gunray. Anakin, on the other hand, is finally accepted by the Council as Obi-Wan’s apprentice. Lastly, Padme offers gifts to the Gungans as token of gratitude for their help during the war.
