Star Trek starts with the Federation starship USS Kelvin checking out the occurrence of a lightning storm in space. The people on board are shocked when they are attacked by Narada, a Romulan ship that comes out of the storm. Narada is headed by Ayel, who demands Kelvin’s Captain Robau to go to Narada and make a deal with him. Robau agrees and inside Narada, he is asks questions about stardate and Ambassador Spock, ideas that he does not know anything about. Robau is killed by Narada’s commander, Nero, and Kelvin is continued to be attack. Kelvin’s first officer, George Kirk, tries to save the rest of the crew and his pregnant wife, Winona. The rest of the personnel escapes as the George pilots the ships collision with Narada. Winona gives birth to a boy whom she named James T. Kirk.
After seventeen years, Spock is admitted to the Vulcan Science Academy. He joins Starfleet when he experiences discrimination against his human mother. On earth, James T. Kirk develops into a reckless student and a bar fight leads him to Captain Christopher Pike who urges him to join the Starfleet Academy. On the academy, Spock befriends Doctor Leonard McCoy.
After three years, a simulation test causes a confrontation between Spock and Kirk. Spock accuses Kirk of cheating which the latter does not deny. Their debate is interrupted by a distress signal coming from Vulcan. McCoy and Kirk suddenly find themselves on board Enterprise, Captain Pike’s ship. Convinced that a trap awaits them, Kirk violates protocol and he tries to convince Pike of the situation
The spaceship arrives and finds Vulcan utterly destructed. The crew see Narada trying to get into Vulcan’s core. Narada attacks the ship but Pike surrenders in order to save his crew. He hands over authority to Spock and tasks Kirk to be the first officer. Together with the other crew members, they try to disable the drill. They are successful but not without losing some members of their team. Still, they can’t prevent Nero from releasing “red matter” into the core. This causes the formation of an artificial black hole that threatens to diminish the planet. Spock saves the Vulcan high council and his father but fails to rescue his mother.
Narada moves towards invading earth. Kirk attempts a mutiny on Spock and this forces him to abandon Kirk on Delta Vega. There, Kirk meets an older Spock and he learns that Nero and the old Spock are from the future. In the future, Romulus is endangered by an upcoming supernova. Spock failed to save the planet using “red matter” and Nero’s family died because of it. Narada and Spock’s vessel were caught in the black hole formed by the supernova and Nero and Spock were brought back in time. Thus, Nero searches to inflict vengeance by trapping him on Delta Vega and making him watch Vulcan’s destruction.
In a Starfleet station, Kirk and the elder Spock meet Montgomery Scott. Spock helps the two get on board the Enterprise. Kirk confronts the young Spock and the latter realizes that his emotions are getting the best of him. He hands over the command of the ship to Kirk and the two team up to fight Nero and Ayel and save Captain Pike. They succeed in killing Nero and saving Pike but to divert Narada from hitting earth, Spock gets inside the elder Spock’s vessel and hits Narada with it. The collision causes the “red matter” inside Narada to ignite. Nero perishes with his ship after he refuses to accept Kirk’s offer to help.
The movie ends with Kirk’s promotion to captain and Pike becomes rear admiral. The command of Enterprise is also passed on to Kirk. The two Spocks meet and the younger one is encouraged to continue his service to Satrfleet. Spock accepts this advice and he becomes Kirk’s first officer.
